<B>Page from an Illuminated Thirteenth Century French Bible</B></I> <BR>Paris, France. <BR>Mid-13th century.<BR>6" x 4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.<BR>Page with the prologue and opening to the Gospel of Matthew in Latin. Three-line decorated initial "M" (Matthew) for the prologue, and five-line historiated initial "L" (Liber generationis Jesu Christi) with an angel scribe seated and writing with his pen and knife for erasures. The angel is the symbol of the Evangelist Matthew, and here it takes the place of the author himself. Both initials are highlighted with gold leaf. The text is in two columns with rubricated initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. Countless Bibles like this one were produced there for clerics, laity, and students.
