<B>Page from an Illuminated Thirteenth Century French Bible</B></I> <BR>Paris, France. <BR>Mid-13th century.<BR>6"x4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.<BR>Beginning of Paul's First Epistle to Timothy in Latin. Five line historiated initial "P" (Paulus Apostolus) containing Saint Paul holding a sword, symbol of his martyrdom. There is also a three-line decorated initial "T" (Timothy) for the opening of the prologue. Both initials are highlighted in gold leaf. The text is in two columns with rubricated initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century, Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. Countless Bibles like this one were produced there for clerics, laity, and students.
