Padraic Woods RUA (1893-1991) COTTAGES IN A LANDSCAPE signed lower right oil on canvas 41 by 51cm., 16 by 20in. Provenance: Dawson Gallery, Dublin Born in Newry Woods studied at the Belfast School of Art and St. Patrick's Teacher Training College, Dublin. He was a friend of James Humbert Craig for over 30 years. In 1931 he was elected an associate of the Ulster Academy of Arts and he exhibited for the first time at the RHA where he continued to show on and off up to 1973. He taught until his early retirement in 1946 when he devoted himself to full time painting. In 1948 He became President of the Ulster Arts Club where he was a regular exhibitor. He also exhibited at the Stephen's Green Gallery in Dublin. In 1964 he was appointed a governor of the Belfast College of Art. A retrospective exhibition was held in the Linen Hall Library Belfast in 1987. A reviewer for the Dublin Magazine summarised Woods as "a painter of landscapes in a poeticised naturalistic version of a manner which has died since the diffusion of Impressionism".
