Pablo Picasso is considered the most important artist of the modern art, who has influenced the art of first half of the 20th century decisively; single sheets of the series ‘La Celestine’ fetch up to 6,800 euro at international auctions

This small-format etching shows a standing female nude figure with long curly hair and a smaller, slightly curved standing cloaked figure. These are probably two of the protagonists of the comedy drama "La Celestina", the beautiful and young Melibea and the old bawd Celestina. Picasso created the sheet for the 66 etchings comprising portfolio "La Celestine", which was published in 1971 by the Atelier Commelynck in Paris and with which Picasso illustrated the late medieval work of the Spanish writer Fernando de Rojas. The present Etching is from an edition outside of the wallet edition of 400 copies.

The aquatint is signed lower right in pencil ‘Picasso’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘21/50’. It is dated and inscribed in the plate ‘10. 8. 68 V‘. The sheet is mounted under a mat, at the upper and lower edge. It is minor toned in the mat window. The sheet is in overall very good condition. The frame shows slight signs of wear. The plate measures 8.5 x 6 cm, the sheet 19.7 x 15.7 cm. The framed dimensions are 35.5 x 30 cm.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

The Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Pablo Picasso created a body of work of about 50,000 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and ceramics. He studied at the Royal Academy in Madrid and at the Art Academy in Barcelona, where his father taught. 1901 Picasso had his first exhibition in a gallery in Paris, followed by numerous international exhibitions. The works from his Blue and Rose period, and the establishing of cubism along with Georges Braque were the beginning of his extraordinary artistic career. The painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) is one of the best known works of Picasso. Like his monumental painting Guernica (1937), no other work has marked the art of the 20th century. Two museums, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona and the Musée Picasso in Antibes Picasso's works were for his own lifetime established. Famous for the diversity of its expressions Pablo Picasso is one of the outstanding artists of the 20th century. (fea)
