PURDY, JAMES
(b. 1923) Prolific American author and poet. A good grouping of six T.L.S. ""James"" and ""James Purdy"", 1p. 4to. each., Brooklyn, ca. 1981-1996, all to Vance Morgan in Chesapeake, VA. In small part: ""...I don't think I really know who influenced me. One is often not even aware of the people or things who have the greatest effect...I sometimes think Cervantes' story 'Rinconcete and Cortadillo' had an effect, but then my own experiences are akin to his story. I think Hemingway and Sherwood Anderson and Mark Twain have influenced me...If you are a collector, I have the privately printed limited edition of my stories and plays, hardcover (only 800 copies were actually printed)...I also have the British edition of NARROW ROOMS, which has corrected the various and errors of the American edition....I appreciate your interest in my work...My new novel MOURNERS BELOW has been published and has received some good notices...I wish people who admire my books would realize what a vulnerable and poverty-stricken person I am. I have never earned a decent living from publishing. People are always sending books to be inscribed without ever asking permission...I realize I must seem rude and incommunicative, but I can not longer handle the many letters and requests which come in...I appreciate your interest, but if it is my writing you like you must realize that the only way I can go on writing is to write..."". With several holograph emendations, the original transmittal envelopes, and a signed photocopy of a French review of his novel Narrow Rooms. A nice dealer's grouping, overall fine condition.
