(PROTESTING A CAPTURED SHIP)
25. (PROTESTING A CAPTURED SHIP) One of the more unusual pieces we have seen, a manuscript D.S., 3pp. 8vo., Boston, Nov. 7, 1781 in which Capt. James McGee "...late Master of the Brig Amsterdam..." swears out a notarized complaint against he British navy for seizing his brig "...ON THE NINETEENTH DAY OF October following being then in Lat 42..46 North was Seized Taken and made Prize of by a British Ship of War named the Amphitrite mounting twenty eight Carriage Guns, Commanded by Robert Biggs who afterwards took out of said Brig the Officers & Crew [words missing] Six of them and ordered them on Board the said Ship and carried them all into Baggaduce in Penobscot River where they arrived the twenty first of October last from whence they Arrived at Boston Yesterday..." On the third page the Consul General of France for New England endorses the notarized protest. Horizontal fold tear results in the loss of a few words, repaired by tape on verso of first page, otherwise very good. $300-500
