PROVENANCE
Barbara Gladstone Gallery, NEW YORK
Thomas Hirschhorn's works are epic and detailed sculptural assemblages, easily recognized for the artist's persistent use of disposable materials such as tinfoil, cardboard, plywood, plastic, and masking tape. Underlying the objects that he fashions out of these meager materials is a sophisticated machine whose inner workings produce effects and interpretations that extend beyond mere formal statement. Hirschhorn's works are small cosmologies, which are interzones of sensory perceptions of everyday life, in the realm of macropolitical movements. Hirschhorn's sculptures are archival - meant to be read, as well as experienced, as they intervene in the public arena. Their inferior forms and materials metaphorically show the fragility of the position from which he is critically challenging power formations, as their scale demonstrates an ambition to recreate the world.
