PROPERTY OF various owners A SINGLE STRAND TAHITIAN CULTURED PEARL AND EMERALD NECKLACE composed of 25 graduated natural color cultured pearls measuring approximately from 18.3 to 14.9mm, completed by an 18K gold clasp set with a rectangular-cut emerald weighing approximately 6.90 carats within a two-tiered surround of brilliant-cut diamonds and circular-cut emeralds, length 183/4 inches With GIA report no. 11859712 dated 15 January 2002 stating that the pearls are cultured, natural color $200,000-250,000 Tahitian pearls, more commonly referred to as Black pearls, are indigenous to the lagoons of French Polynesia, a cluster of coral islands in the middle of the South Pacific. The Pinctada Margaritifera mollusk that produces these pearls is also referred to as the Black-Lipped Oyster. Farmers graft pearls into these large and fragile oysters after three years of age; the pearl then grows for a period of two years after which they are harvested. The average pearl size ranges between 8mm and 14mm. Some pearls reach 16mm and exceptionally 18mm - a fact that underscores the rarity of the pearls gathered for this necklace. Grading is based on size, color, shape, and luster. The Gemological Institute of America has officially recognized the natural color of Tahitian pearls, which ranges from black to silver including a range of hues resulting from the breakup of light on the pearl's surface. Generally, fullness in color, a round shape, a large size, and a lustrous body all denote greater value.
