Two plates from this dessert service depicting MoliËre (1622-1673) and Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1981.223.1-2). Nicholas DesprÈaux Boileau (1636-1711) was a poet and leading literary critic in his day, known for his influence in upholding classical standards in both French and English. A regular system of incised marks designating the workmen and year of manufacture was instituted at the SËvres manufactory in 1801. From 1830 these marks were inscribed in the following order: initials of the thrower, the last two digits of the year, the number of the month, and (when applicable) the initials of the repairer (Bernard Chevallier, “Les Marques en creux de la porcelaine de SËvres (1801-1871),” in Keramik Freunde der Schweiz (December 1980), no. 94, p. 5. Thus, the present plates marked, 31-3 and 29-11, respectively, were produced in March 1831 and November 1829.
