SÈbastien Bourdon (1616-1671) was a painter with a considerable reputation for landscapes, who used nature largely as a backdrop for historical and religious works. He was also known for his colorful caricatures and strikingly lifelike portraits. Bourdon excelled at imitating the styles of other painters, such as Claude Lorrain (1604-1682) and Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), and at adding a personal touch, but he never developed a distinctive style of his own.
