property of various owners A SËVRES HARD-PASTE BISCUIT PORCELAIN FIGURAL GROUP OF L’AMOUR NOURRI PAR L’ESPERANCE Circa 1770 Of a scantily clad maiden breastfeeding a putto perched atop a truncated column, an anchor at her feet (restorations) 91?8 in. (23.2 cm) $3,000-4,000 This model is recorded by Emile Bourgeois and Georges Lechevallier-Chevignard, Le Biscuit de SËvres. Receuil des ModËles de la Manufacture de SËvres au XVIIIe SiËcle. Paris, nd, pl. 10, no. 44. This figural group was modeled in 1770 from the terracotta exhibited at the Salon of 1769 by Jean-Jacques CaffiÈri (1725-1792). Denis Diderot (1713-1784) criticized it severely: “Je ne me soucie pas davantage de cette femme qui se presse le sein et qui lance du lait dans la bouche de cet enfant.” (Jules Guiffrey, Les CaffiÈri. Paris, 1877, p. 203.) SËvres paired it with a group called L’Amour refusant les prÈsens de la Fortune. Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) purchased a number of SËvres biscuit groups during his stay in Paris, including one of these, which formed part of the porcelains that were shipped back to Monticello, where it remains to this day. (Susan Grey Dettweiler, “French Porcelain on Federal Tables,” American Ceramic Circle Bulletin, no. 3, p. 98.) Louis XVI also owned an example of this composition and Versailles has recently bought one for their collection.
