(31 cm) $3,000-4,000 provenance Comte FranÁois de Salverte the present candlestick is Adapted from two designs by Forty, published before 1768, as part of a set entitled Oeuvres d’orfËvrerie, Livre III, Flambeaux de table; see pl. 5 for the base and the nozzle, and pl. 6 for the stem. Comte FranÁois de Salverte (1872-1929) is known chiefly as the author of the indispensable compendium Les EbÈnistes FranÁais du XVIIIe siËcle. (Paris, 1923, re-edited 1927, 1953, 1962, 1975 and 1985.) Like this publication, in which he gathered together much unedited visual and archival information about 18th century ÈbÈnistes and menuisiers, building upon the work of Henri Vial, Adrien Marcel and AndrÈ Girodie. (Les Artistes dÈcorateurs du Bois. two vols., Paris, 1912 and 1922.) his Le Meuble franÁais d’aprËs les ornemanistes de 1660 ‡ 1789 (Paris, 1930) also broke ground, facilitating the writing of later important works, such as AndrÈ Theunissen’s Meubles et siËges du XVIIIe siËcle (Paris, 1934), Jean Nicolay’s L’Art et la maniËre des maÓtres ÈbÈnistes franÁais au XVIIIe siËcle (Paris, 1956) and Alexandre PradËre’s EbÈnistes franÁais de Louis XIV ‡ la RÈvolution (Paris, 1989). He was, of course, also a collector, as attested to by the photo credits in his books.
