property of Various owners A LOUIS XV ORMOLU CARTEL CLOCK Attributed to Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755), circa 1749 The circular white enameled dial with black Arabic minute chapter ring and blue Roman hour chapter ring signed JULIEN LEROY DE LA/SOCIETE DES ARTS behind a domed glazed door, within a scrolled asymmetrical rocaille and acanthus-sheathed case surmounted by sunbeams, set to the left with a bodiced female bust above palms, to the right with a dog head, and beneath with a goat bust 331?4 x 171?2 x 51?4 in. (84.5 x 44.5 x 13.25 cm) $18,000-22,000 As stated by Jean-Dominique Augarde: “Julien II Le Roy (1686-1759) is considered to be the most famous clockmaker of the 18th century. His reputation is founded on his fruitful contributions to the accuracy of watches and clocks. His mechanical discoveries, adopted by the most skillful of his colleagues, not only stimulated the renewal of Parisian clock production but also healthy competitiveness in pursuing research on the measurement of time.” (Les Ouvriers du Temps. Paris, 1996, p. 358.) The present clock is very closely related to a smaller (45.5 x 21.5 cm) example signed by Caffieri in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Hans Ottomeyer & Peter Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen. Munich, 1986, Vol. I, p. 116, fig. 2.5.9-.10.)
