<B><BR>PAUL LELONG (French, 1799-1846)</B></I><BR><I>A Pair of Still Lifes</B></I><BR>Tempera and gouache on artist's board<BR>6-1/4 x 8-1/4 inches (15.9 x 21.0 cm)<BR> <BR>EXHIBITED:<BR>Conde Nast, New York (label verso).<BR><BR>Lelong specialized in still-life painting in water media on an intimate scale. His cabinet-sized paintings are generally horizontal in format, and display items along a bare stone tabletop. Frequently the array of objects refers to specific themes such as the senses or the seasons. As such, Lelong often conceived of his small pictures in suites of two, four, or six paintings.
