property of a new york doctor A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROSEWOOD, TULIPWOOD, BOXWOOD, AMARANTH AND PARQUETRY BONHEUR-DU-JOUR stamped G.SCHLICHTIG, Circa 1780, The rectangular top above two short drawers flanking two doors, a writing surface and a long frieze drawer, each surface, panel or drawer front crossbanded, with compartmentalizing trim, and in all cases other than the short drawer fronts with crosshatched squares to the corners, on tapering square legs with conforming sabots, the locks of doors to upper section replaced, the small drawers to upper section partially relined 363?4 x 28 x 161?2 in. (93.3 x 71.1 x 41.9 cm) $5,000-7,000 Of German origin, Jean-Georges Schlichtig (d. 1782), maÓtre in 1765, worked in the heart of the faubourg Saint-Antoine in the late Louis XV, Transitional and classic Louis XVI styles, producing a large and varied body of work. Although seemingly derivative, Schlichtig’s work is marked by details that define it as his own. For example, the crosshatched squares to the corners of the crossbanded panels on the present bonheur-du-jour appear on other pieces such as a secretaire-‡-abattant (sold Drouot, Paris, June 28, 1985; Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier francais du XVIIIe Siecle. Paris, 1998, p. 790, fig. A). As was common with ebenistes of his level, Schlichtig appears to have kept in stock certain standard mounts that reappear throughout his work, such as the keyhole mounts on the present piece.
