Property of a gentleman A GERMAN ROCOCO GILTWOOD CANAPÈ ‡ CONFIDENTS Circa 1740 The frame molded and scrolled overall, the crestrail above a deep-buttoned padded back, the seatrail set with a rocaille cabochon flanked by scrolled acanthus between and above each cabriole leg with scrolled foot 391?8 x 126 x 30 in. (99.5 x 320 x 76 cm) $50,000-80,000 in the 18th century two kinds of canapÈs ‡ confidents were made, one with fixed end seats and the other with removable ones. The finest rococo example known is of the latter type and was made by Nicolas Heurtaut (maÓtre in 1753) circa 1757 (Bill G. B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair in 18th-century France, Paris, 1989, p. 239, ill., 330 cm). Another, made by Louis-Charles Carpentier (maÓtre 1752) circa 1770, is in the collection of the MusÈe des Arts dÈcoratifs, Strasbourg (Inv. LXIX 19, Ibid., p. 288, ill., 320 cm). The finest example in any style is that ordered by Louis XVI, made by Jean-Nicolas Blanchard (maÓtre in 1771), carved by Antoine Rascalon, and gilded by Dutems in 1784 for the Salon d’EtÈ in the appartement of Mesdames AdelaÔde and Victoire at the Ch‚teau de Bellevue (Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; Pierre Verlet, Le Mobilier Royal franÁais, Vol. IV, Paris, 1990, no. 39, pp. 145-49, ill.; 406 cm).
