Designed in the antique manner popularized by Percier and Fontaine in the Recueils des DÈcorations IntÈrieures of 1802, this model of guÈridon can be confidently attributed to Alexandre Maigret on the basis of one stamped example (sold Nouveau Drouot, January 18, 1988, lot 132). Maigret (act. 1775-1826) first appeared as a tapissier and ÈbÈniste circa 1775 and went on to run one of the most famous and accomplished Parisian furniture-making houses of the early 19th century. Established at 20 rue Vivienne, he ranked alongside the likes of Jacob-Desmalter and Pierre-BenoÓst Marcion. In 1805 he was appointed Fournisseur du Garde-Meuble de la couronne, later du Garde-Meuble ImpÈrial, and from 1813-1817 was tapissier et fabricant de meubles d’ÈbÈnisterie de S.M. l’Empereur et Roi. He supplied numerous pieces of case and seat-furniture for most of the Imperial households: Saint-Cloud, Strasbourg, Laeken, Versailles, Trianon, Tuileries, Meudon, Fontainebleau, CompiËgne, Rambouillet, Rosny, Marrac. Maigret collaborated on the production of ormolu with the FeuchËre and Fossey workshops throughout his career, a fact attested to by the quality of the bronzes on his pieces. In fact, he went so far as to acquire the stock in trade of Lucien-FranÁois FeuchËre (act. 1784-1824) in 1829.
