(56 x 63.5 x 53.5 cm) $20,000-30,000 Provenance Charles Balay, Lyon; Frederick P. Victoria and Son (sold christie’s new york, May 27, 1999, lot 351). Stools generally, and the folding stools in particular, called pliants after the verb plier, to fold, exist because of formal court etiquette. usually, only the King and Queen sat in armchairs during public events, and everybody else was given a seat in keeping with their station; some stood. People were required to sit upright on a stool as it had no back, and folding stools could be easily collapsed for storage. Nonetheless, they were intended to last and were accordingly well made and finely decorated, as in the present case, to emulate the rich surroundings in which they were used.
