Property from the john hobbs collection A RÈGENCE GILTWOOD MIRROR Attributed to the marchand-miroitier Pierre Rabel de Corneville, circa 1725 The arched divided plate surmounted by an acanthus-sheathed scrolled cresting centered by an espangnolette with acanthus lambrequin headdress, flanked by acanthus strapwork cartouches to the sides above ribbed Corinthian pilasters, the frieze centered by a stylized scallop shell flanked by scrolling acanthus, on block feet 801?2 X 52 in. (230 X 132 cm) $60,000-90,000 Provenance Count Volpi di Misurata, Rome (sold Sotheby’s London, December 16, 1998, lot 9). A mirror very similar to the present example in size and with fluted-glass pilasters and a cresting and base of the same form, inscribed with the initials PR JJ (Christie’s New York, May 23, 1995, lot 165 and May 21, 1997, lot 362), has been attributed by Patricia Lemonnier to the marchand-Miroitier Pierre Rabel de Corneville, whose workshop was in rue Grenetat in Paris. The inventory drawn up following the death of his wife in 1764 lists almost 60 mirrors. The same mark is known to appear on three other mirrors.
