PROMINENT CSA GENERALS AND POLITICIANS RECOMMEND A MAN FOR THE MARINE CORPS
Includes William Barksdale, killed at Gettysburg

A fine association of important Civil War Mississippians on a single document, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d., likely Mississippi, ca, 1860], to "The President", undoubtedly James Buchanan. In part: "...The State of Mississippi being without a Representative in the U.S Marine Corps, the undersigned Senators and Representatives from Mississippi respectfully recommend to the President G. Addison Denny...a worthy gentleman of intelligence, and of fine address and appearance...for a place in that corps...". Signed at conclusion by WILLIAM BARKSDALE, CSA brigadier general killed at Gettysburg, LUCIUS Q. C. LAMAR, Supreme Court Justice and CSA envoy to Russia, REUBEN DAVIS, CSA brigadier general, ALBERT G. BROWN, governor, OTHO SINGLETON, Confederate congressman, and JOHN MCRAE, governor and Confederate congressman. Also attached is a cut signature of JEFFERSON DAVIS which was apparently attached to the petition at the time of its signing as Davis was unavailable in person. One short very clean fold split, else fine.

Estimate: $1,000 - 1,500.
