PROHIBITION
A great group of documents related to prohibition (and ways around it!) in Louisville, Ky., 1930. It contains the printed application of one Dr. Myron E. Hoge, for the rights to administer liquor for medicinal purposes, 2pp. 4to., Jan. 9, 1930, in which Hoge requests permission from The Treasury Department overseeing the National Prohibition Act to: "...Prescribe intoxicating liquor in accordance with Regulations 2, Article XVII. Administer intoxicating liquor to patients in cases of emergency only, in accordance with Regulations 2, Section 1713.. (Not to exceed six quarts per annum). Use 2 wine gallons of alcohol per annum for sterilization and laboratory puurposes, in accordance with Regulations 2, Article XVII...". The application includes two blank pages entitled "Application for permit to purchase intoxicating liquors for other than beverage purposes", which lists types of liquors and quantities desired. Hoge must have gotten permission, for the application also includes a Permit that outlines the uses mentioned above, but it is unsigned and not dated. Accompanying this is a great printed "Kentucky Doctors" price list of "Medicinal Liquors" from 1930, listing the booze and its rather exhorbitant costs: "Black Gold, 18 years old, $35.00 for 12 pt. pkg. Bourbon De Luxe, 15 years old, $27.50 per 12 pt. pkg.", Old Crow, Old Grandad, Brandy, Rum and Gin alike at similarly inflated prices. Finally the lot contains two forms (not filled-in) for a doctor to submit his prescription stubs, and envelopes addressed in print to "Prohibition Administrator, Louisville Ky". Very good condition, a great assemblage to display over the family bar!
