PRIESTLEY ( Joseph ), FRS. Lectures on history and general policy, to which is prefixed, An essay on a course of liberal education for civil and active live … Dublin : Printed by P. Byrne, No. 108, Grafton-Street. 1788FIRST IRISH EDITION(?), with 2 engraved folding tables, pages xxxvii, (1, blank), 120, 121*-122*, 121-471, (1 blank), (11) index;, (1, blank), 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt ruled spine, with label, gilt, with the ontemporary ownership inscription of "James Stewart / Feb. 1789" on title : a very good copy. Possibly the first Dublin edition of this important work outlining Priestley’s educational theories, promoting the study of history to a high position, eclipsing the more traditional studies such as classical languages. A very brief outline of the syllabus had been published as early as 1765 in Warrington (only a few copies survive), but the entire course did not appear until 1788, when it was published in a Birmingham/London edition. There was another edition published at Dublin in 1788 by Luke White.ENGLISH PRE 1801; DUBLIN PRINTED; ENGLISH LITERATURE; HISTORY; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
