COLONEL DAVID IRONS OF THE 86TH ILLINOIS INFANTRY. This fine sword was presented to Colonel David D. Irons of the 86th Illinois Infantry by Lieutenant Charles H. Dean, also of the 86th Illinois. The 86th was organized in Peoria, Illinois and was commanded by Colonel Irons from its inception on August 27,1862. He commanded the 86th at the Battle of Perryville and the Battle of Stone's River,.but tragically died at Nashville, Tennessee on August 11, 1863. The sword itself measures 38 1/2" overall with a blade length of 32 1/8". The blade is etched over about 18 1/2" with various patriotic, military and foliate motifs. The ricasso is stamped "J. H." on one side and "1862" on the other. There is an etched mark near the ricasso that reads "Ames Mf'g Co Chicopee Mass". Gilded brass hilt featuring a pierced semi-basket guard with "US" in the center. The upper inside of the guard is engraved "Presented to, Col. D. D. Irons by Lieut. Chas. H. Dean.". Wire wrapped shark skin grip. Gilded brass mounted blued iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing gray patina with no nicks. Etching is light but easily dicernable. Hilt shows traces of original gilded finish. The grip has a separation from drying and nearly all the wire wrap is missing. Scabbard is undented but is missing the bottom of the drag. Mounts show only traces of original gilding and the throat is missing. (02-24493-6/BF). $1500-2200.
