PRATT, MARGARET; SALEM, MA, 1756.
Single-sheet letter, writing on both sides, addressed to "John Tully Esq. in Saybrook," with remnants of sealing wax, dated May 21, 1756. Margaret Pratt of Salem, Massachusetts, writes to her nephew about the death of her daughter, following the death of another daughter, and writes, "These grievous afflictions are to us solemn Admonition of the Frailty of human nature and the uncertainty of our continuance here..." She ends by reporting on her own infirmities and remonstrating Tully for not writing to her via the "bearer" of her previous letter, Mr. Lynde. 12 1/4in. x 7 3/4in. Condition: Three vertical folds, and one horizontal, the creases with a number of fold tears. There is a tear through the address portion. There is toning/soiling and old dampstains. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of papers and ephemera related to the family of Edward Mortimer Chapman (1862-1952), a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author, and a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635).
