A PAIR OF EARLY 20TH CENTURY NIO OR TEMPLE GUARDIAN MASKS<p>
An attractive pair of Nio or temple guardian masks of lacquered papier mache. Nio stood at the gates of the temple throughout Japanese history to guard against evil entering the holy places of worship. They had powerful demeanors and ferocious faces to frighten and overcome any evil or enemies of the faith. This interesting pair is made of hardened papier mache with a lacquered light brown patina. The reverse is lacquered in gloss black to seal against moisture. They were made circa the first half of the 20th century, and show some losses to the surface lacquer due to age. Each is approximately 14" high by 9" wide, and they make a very attractive wall hanging pair of masks.
