A PAIR OF ORIGINAL CHINESE PAINTINGS OF LADIES

An attractive and colorful pair of gouache paintings on silk of aristocratic Chinese ladies mentoring young apprentices. One of the paintings depicts a teacher of the koto (a stringed instrument that sits on the musician's lap) demonstrating how it's played, as the younger lady leans over a pine tree to watch. Cherry blossoms and mountains can be seen in the distance, and the artist's inscription and signature appear vertically on the right. The other painting depicts a Chinese lady with a fan demonstrating the art of the dance, while the younger girl imitates her movements at her side. They stand on a raised veranda under a tree, and are dressed in elegant, flowing attire decorated with red ribbons and bows. Detail and composition are quite good. The artist's name and inscription appear at the upper right.

Condition of the pair of paintings is very good, except for a few minor wrinkles in the silk fabric which is the canvas; some minor acid spotting due to age can also be seen at close range. The paintings are in matching off-white silk mats with red double mat linings, and each is under frosted glass. Each is framed in gilt wood cut to resemble bamboo. The pair was painted circa the 1960's, and overall dimensions of each painting are 16.75 inches high by 19.25 inches wide.
