PPK Compression Leggings worn by cosmonaut Vladimir Lyakhov after his descent on this mission....
"PPK" Compression Leggings worn by cosmonaut Vladimir Lyakhov after his descent on this mission. This pair of gray-green canvas leggings attaches to the waist by means of an elastic band and adjustable web belt. Air bladders are sewn into the calves and thighs to make inflatable by means of an attached rubber hose and air pump with mounted pressure gauge. Compression trousers were a necessity for return flights from long-term missions in space (i.e., 30 days or more). The tight fit kept the blood from rushing into the lower parts of the body during the 5-to-6 G forces of the descent and in the first few days back on earth as the body readjusts to gravity. These pants (along with a letter of authenticity from Lyakhov, now missing) were offered as lot 249 in the Sotheby 1996 sale with an estimate of $2,500-3,500. They did not sell. A great opportunity to acquire an essential piece of space memorabilia. ALSO included is the white nylon bag that these came in (with ID tag and Lyakhov's initials sewn to the outside as well as another unusual type of bag with tan "ribs". Estimate: $ 500 - 750
