POUCH, ARAPAHO, LATE 19TH CENTURY. This example, constructed of commercial leather, is characteristically Arapaho for the type of pouch and its beaded decoration. Such of the genre frequently contained powdered paint or small personal articles. They are characterized by a long triangular tab at the bottom. Alfred Kroeber, renowned anthropologist, collected a number of virtually identical pouches from the Arapaho that are now in the collections of the American Museum of Natural History, NYC. Size: 14 long x 2-1/2" wide. CONDITION: Overall surface soiling and staining, some crackling of epidermis; approximately one inch of beadwork missing at upper end of vertical lane on pouch proper. 4-55214 (500-1,000)"
