Wright, owner of Wright’s Old Wooden Corner in New York City, writes to his employees enthusiastically describing the capital city, mentioning several landmarks and Civil War notables. ALS, 7pp, 8vo, Washington, DC, Oct 9, 1867. On famed Willard’s Hotel embossed stationery with companion transmittal envelope. In small part, “In my perambulation around this city of ‘Magnificent distances’...I am in pursuit of pleasure...” Describing the public buildings, he writes, “The first & principal is the Capitol situated on a hill at one end of Pennsylvania Ave the principal street of the city, the next is the White House or President’s Mansion surrounded with a beautiful park extending down to the Potomac. Near this is the State Navy War & Treasury Depts all situated at the other end of the Ave just one mile apart between these on the Ave are the large Hotels of which there are several. We are at Willard’s as you see which is the principal and largest. We are comfortably quartered having Gen Sherman in the next room. I have met him several times in the hall and have had several nods from him. The office of this Hotel is the general exchange of all politicians who were last night & today all agitated by the elections in Penn, Ohio &c but few persons of note are here now...” Wright describes the Patent office in great detail, likening it to “an immense collection of children’s toys...” He advises that “Arlington House the former residence of Gen Lee [was] surrounded by several hundred acres of land which is now cultivated by a colony of Freedmen...in the rear of the old house are the huts formerly occupied by Lee’s slaves now by the Freedmen...” Much more. Boldly penned and signed. Light general toning; scattered light foxing; o/w VG.
