PORTER, FITZ JOHN
(1822 - 1901) Union major general who fought at Second Bull Run and Antietam. He was later accused by Pope of "disobedience and disloyalty" and was relieved from command. Early war-date L.S. "F. J. Porter" as assistant adjutant general in another hand, 2pp. 4to., on "Headquarters Department of Pennsylvania letterhead", Martinsburg, Va., July 10, 1861 on secretarial copy of Special Orders 96 concerning, in part: "…Major General Sanford New York Volunteers is assigned to the command of the 3rd Division, which will composed as follows, 7th Brigade C. P. Stone commanding…". Interestingly, this document can be found in the Official Records of the Civil War. Very good.
