PORFIRIO SALINAS (1910-1973)
Untitled Landscape
Oil on canvas
16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm)
Signed lower left

In this well composed Hill Country wildflower painting, Salinas has chosen to paint coreopsis and Indian paintbrushes, instead of the more commonly depicted bluebonnets. The artist creates an illusion of distance and depth by placing objects at various distances from the foreground, as contextual cues for the eye. In the very bottom right corner of the painting is a clump of grass extending out of the picture plane. A little further, there are more clumps of grass and prickly poppies. A little further still, there is to the left a bush and prickly pear. A little further still and there are small trees on either side of the canvas. Approaching midground is the large solitary oak. Then receding into the distance are clumps of bushes and trees. Even further still, in the remote hills, Salinas uses atmospheric effects to show distance. This layering of objects, and the skilled use of atmospheric effects, combine to produce a superb rendition of the Texas Hill Country in spring time.

Provenance:
Harry Halff Fine Art, San Antonio, TexasCondition Report: Excellent condition.
