PORFIRIO SALINAS (1910-1973)
Untitled Prickly Pear in Bloom
Oil on canvas
20in. x 24in.
Signed lower left

Porfirio Salinas was born in Bastrop, Texas. He met Robert Wood and José Arpa while selling art supplies. Both Wood and Arpa would allow him to observe their painting and Salinas learned from their technique. Robert Wood eventually made Salinas an understudy of sorts and was reputed to pay him five dollars a canvas to finish painting the bluebonnets, which Wood considered tedious work.

Salinas's earliest commissions were painting signs on beer trucks and designing Christmas cards. His nature subjects were restricted to the Southwest and mainly Texas. His subjects were bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers, prickly pear and yucca, dusty roads, Texas Hill Country landscapes, and genre scenes, including bullfights.

Salinas provides the artistic link from the earliest Texas Impressionists such as Onderdonk, Arpa, and Wood, during a time when modernism and abstraction were the style of the day. While Salinas never achieved the recognition of the professional art world, he was hugely popular and well recognized by the general public in the Southwest.

The recognition of his importance in the history of Texas landscape painting is verified by the number of contemporary Texas landscape painters that credit Salinas as their major influence. In this regard, he is the link between the past and the future in Texas landscape painting.

This magnificent painting of the blooming prickly pear is emblematic of Texas, perhaps a little rough exterior but with the capacity for great beauty. The spring rains have come, the valley is lush and green, and even the cactus are blooming.

Condition Report: Excellent condition.
