PONCA INDIAN PHOTOGRAPH BY C.M. BELL. Albumen photograph, 5 x 7", mounted on larger board of "Hairy Bear" a Ponca chief. Not signed, but attributed to Bell on the basis of studio props. Bell a long-time Washington photographer who captured images of visiting Americana Indian delegation members (see Fleming and Richardson, 1988). From the Rookwood Pottery files, and purchased when the studio was moved in the 1960s; probably originally purchased from the Bureau of American Ethology. With Rookwood's typed strip label on recto and handstamp on verso. Mount slightly warped, image fine, with hint of soil.
