"Good lot of four pieces including HAMILTON FISH, Very fine content A.L.S. as Secretary of State, 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Nov. 21, 1876 to Charles Nordhoff of the New York Herald concerning the disputed election of 1876. He writes in part: ""...Every patriotic Citizen should agree in writing the danger which passion, & misapprehension, & suspiciousness seem not incapable of brining upon the nation- The Returning Boards of some of the States, are justly under public suspicion & mistrust - bet even past misconduct should not prejudice the possibility of an honest return at present. I thank that one great danger of the moment, if not the greatest, arises from the mistrust, which want of personal character & past misconduct create in the public mind..."" Very good to fine condition; JAMES G. BLAINE, Good content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Columbus, Oct. 4, 1889 marked ""Private"" to JOHN WANAMAKER and writes in part: ""...The pressure upon Ohio is simply appalling -- The Presidential battle is long fought out on this soil. It is not there[?] an Ohio contest -- It is the national Contest and hence Ohio has some claim on her sister states -- There is vast [?] of money in the hands of the Democrats -- Evidence of that accumulates on all hands -- I am sure the Republican Committee does not want a dollar for any corrupt purpose..."" Usual folds, otherwise very good; ROGER B. TANEY, signature on a small slip mounted and dated Mar. 12, 1838. Light soiling, otherwise very good; JOHN FORSYTH, Partly printed D.S., 1p. folio, Washington, April 7, 1838 a passport for Francis O. Smith. The verso bears visas from France and Belgium. Very good condition. Four pieces." 2491 Good lot of four pieces including HAMILTON FISH, Very fine content A.L.S. as Secretary of State, 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Nov. 21, 1876 to Charles Nordhoff of the New York Herald concerning the disputed election of 1876.
