<B>POLISHED PIETERSITE SPHERE</B></I><BR> <I>Drom, China</B></I><BR>A variety of tiger-eye, pietersite is found in only a few locations around the world, formed from a silicated seam of asbestos with iron intrusion. It alternates from a shimmering golden yellow to a strong dark indigo color, depending on whether the asbestos fibers have been oxidized (yellow) or not (blue). It is rare enough to find such strong color zones clearly demarcated in any mineral, but the present example is particularly striking for its strong contrast.
