<B>POLISHED MALACHITE SPHERE</B></I><BR> <I>Democratic Republic Of Congo</B></I><BR>With its finely graduated shades of green running in parallel bands around the circumference, this exquisite malachite sphere has the appearance of some as-yet undiscovered green planet. Its bold color has been prized throughout history for its decorative virtues, both as a pigment for green paint since antiquity until about 1800, and most famously as the highlight of the Malachite Room in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.
