<B>POLISHED JAPANESE RHODOCHROSITE SCULPTURE</B></I><BR> <I>Nakuraishi Mine, Hokkaido, Japan</B></I><BR>Practically all of the lapidary grade rhodochrosite seen over the last 40+ years has come from Argentina. Very little is seen from other, historic localities. This rare example comes from one of those defunct localities. It is a delicately patterned by-product of Japanese mining and dates to an era when significant amounts of such activity were still taking place in the Land of the Rising Sun. It is flat sawn on the back and contour polished on the front. When back-lit, the dark 'eyes' light up in hues reminiscent of ruby-red grapefruit. This effect is emphasized by concentric rings of lighter Rhodochrosite arranged in alternating bands. A classic rare lapidary find from a vanished time and place. It measures 5 ½ x 4 x 1 inches thick.
