A pair of items by notable nineteenth-century poets, the first HENRY LONGFELLOW (1807 - 1882) American poet and author whose works include The Song of Hiawatha, The Psalm of Life and Paul Revere's Ride; A.L.S. signed with initials 3pp. 8vo., Cambridge, May 17, 1855, to "Fields", in part: "...Both Appleton and Kensett were out when I arrived...I am sure they will be delighted...If any vacancy remains I would by all means put in George Sumner...". Mounting strip to verso, otherwise very good. Along with JOHN. G. WHITTIER (1807-1892), the "Quaker Poet", known for "Barefoot Boy" and "Barbara Freitchie"; A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], to the same correspondent, in part: "...I meant to have brought the sheets of the 'Poems' with me to Boston...I now send them...Of course there will be a new arrangement to the notes...I have nothing that I would venture to send you for the Atlantic..." and more similar literary content. Torn at top edge with just a slight loss of text, otherwise good condition.
