PLOWDEN ( Edmund ). The commentaries, or reports of … containing, divers cases upon matters of law … originally written in French, and now faithfully translated in to English, and considerably improved by marginal notes and references … (with) The Quaeries of Mr. Plowden, now first rendered into English at large, with references and many useful observations. In two parts. With two new tables, more complete than any yet published ; the one, of the names of the cases, the other of principal matters. Dublin : Printed for H. Watts … and W. Jones … , 1792FIRST IRISH EDITION, unnumbered pages, with one or two anomalies of signature, but apparently complete, 2 vols, thick 8vo, strongly and neatly bound (not unpleasantly) in 19C cloth : in very good to nice state. An uncommon edition, well represented in US, only two copies in Dublin and none in the UK. Plowden, a Catholic, achieved a considerable professional reputation and was esteemed as one of the most learned lawyers of his time. His name is frequently associated with well-known legal aphorisms ; Camden praised him for his learning and ‘integrity of life’. Sir Edward Coke approvingly referred to him in his Institutes as a ‘sage of the law’ (ODNB).ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) KISBEY ( Wm. H. ).
