Original lithograph from "Les Maitre de L'Affiches" series. Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris, 1896. Condition A. Certificate of Authenticity is provided.
"This Satire by English playwright Sydney Grundy concerns the attempts of three society woman to explore the new trends in vogue at the end of the 19th century. The results are comic: Smoking only makes them sick; a light-hearted flirtation backfires by becoming deep love; and forays into uplifting intellectual pursuits turn hilarious. The work had a successful London run of 173 performances but closed in New York in less than two months. Whether or not Grundy himself regarded the feminist movement as a joke, he expressed society's opposition to it with eloquence and humour. For many women of the era, the way to emancipation entailed many a false and awkward step; the play and its poster serve as reminders" (Gold p.111)
