PIUS IX
409. PIUS IX (1792 - 1878) Pope whose leadership of the church saw much tumult, including his flight to Gaeta after the 1848 Insurrection and loss of a great part of the papal dominions. Fine content A.L.S. "G[iovanni] M[aria] Archbishop of Spoleto" 2pp. tall 4to., Spoleto, Jan. 4, 1831, in Italian to "Monsignore the Auditor of the H[oly] S[ee]", in part: "...I read with true satisfaction the letter of the most pious Signor Deputy Bruni, on which I intend to place obstacles in the way of his healthful reflections. Although I was always of the opinion that the examinations of the young girls called to the convent by the Lord are always dangerous when they have to be exposed to the world again, the Bruni family is nonetheless the exception to the rule, as I am of the opinion that in that family one lives as in a cloister...the young girl Miss Sofia Bruni...is too sensitive to exempt her from an examination, whether in the convent or in the paternal home. So for this reason...I find nothing wrong with letter her return with her family in autumn...". Boldly penned, very good.$400-500
