PITT, WILLIAM (THE YOUNGER)
(1759 - 1806) British Prime Ministerwho reduced the national debt, brought forward progressive fiscal policies, and waged a succesful war against Napoleon's France. A.L.S. signed "Mr. Pitt" in text, 2pp. 4to., Downing Street, Feb. 7, 1800, "10 PM" to King George III just a year before he would drive Pitt out of power. In full: "Mr. Pitt humbly begs leave to acquaint your Majesty that the motion which He made today in the Committee of Supply of granting five hundred thousand Pounds to be advanced for the purposes stated in your Majesty's Message, was opposed by W. Nichols, W. Tierney, W. Chendan, and W. W. Smith, and supported by W. Pitt, W. Wilberforce, W Windham and Sir. W. Palseney. On a [illeg.] the Question was carried by 162 to 19." Perhaps Pitt was attempting to score political points with the King as he was heading on a collision course with the king over Catholic Emancipation in Ireland. Pitt resigned the following year when the king refused to support the equality of Catholics and Protestants. Together with a L.S. "W. Pitt" 1p. 4to., Downing Street, Dec. 20, 1788 to N.W. Wraxall informing him that "...I cannot refrain from taking the Liberty of most earnestly requesting the favor of your Attendance on Monday Next, when the Debate is to be renewed on the third Resolution reported from the committee on the State of the Nation. I beg leave also to acquit you that after that Day no other Public Business will be proposed to the House till Monday Sennight when further Resolutions will be proposed respecting the settlement of the Government...". Both letters bear the usual folds, otherwise very good condition. Two pieces.
