Depicted in this engraving or etching by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) are the remains of the Temple of Neptune. The description at the lower left begins "Vüe du temple de Neptune Dieu tutelaire de l?ancienne ville de Pesto." Possibly from Differentes vues de quelques restes des trois grands edifices qui subsistent encore dans le milieu de l?ancienne ville de Pesto autrement Possidonia et qui est situèe dans la Lucanie, published in Rome in 1777. Plate number " 671 " suggests it may come from Opere Varie (Rome 1777-8) or Firmin Didot de 1836 des Gravures de Piranèse which were collections of all the engravings created by the artist. (Consulting Piranesi Early Architectural Fantasies: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Etchings, by Andrew Robinson, will surely help identify the source of this exceptional work.) Frame measures 28 3/4 x 36 1/2 x 1 inches and the portion of the print which is exposed measures 21 1/8 x 28 3/4 inches. Frame weighs approximately 8-10 lbs. This work was purchased from The Plaza Art Galleries on East 59th Street in New York in 1972. This print has not been examined out of the frame since being framed over 30 years ago.
