PIPE BAG, PLAINS, 19TH CENTURY
PIPE BAG, PLAINS, 19TH CENTURY. Of unusual type; constructed of commercially tanned hide, elaborated with porcupine quillwork, including the statement: Presented to William Bent by T. E. Parker 1859". Structure and quilled motifs are typical of the Middle and Western Sioux, but the work is very coarse / substandard. It is conceivable that this bag is indeed from the period, but how a piece commissioned to be made by the Sioux and destined for the trader, William Bent (at Bent's fort in Colorado), is difficult to explain. This is consigned by the owner of the Carl Moon collection but he states this did not come from the Moon collection. Size: 23-1/2" long. CONDITION: Quills faded, some loose and broken stitches, leather desiccated, some cracking; cloth lining frayed at opening. NOT Carl Moon Collection 4-55235 BL15 (400-500)"
