PILLOW, GIDEON J.
(1806 - 1878) Confederate major general, who fought at Belmont and was second-in-command at Fort Donelson from which he fled to avoid capture by Grant. A.L.S. "Gid. Pillow" 3pp. 4to., Memphis, Oct. 5, 1874, to John Forforth, Assistant U.S. Attorney General, in part: "...I wish to take proof showing that [T] was the Shippers mark in the original bill of lading and to establish the ownership of 66 bales of cotton marked 'Dickenson' without any other marks. This cotton was not that of my wife and wish to show that it belonged to Michael H. Dickenson, who was a cousin to my wife. The object of this letter is to ask if you will allow me to take proof if these two proofs, that is to say, to establish the shippers mark of my wife's cotton, and the ownership of this 66 bales marked 'Dickenson', upon giving my personal notice to Judge Ager...". Boldly penned and very good.
