The scene is taken from the novel Atala by Francois René de Chateaubriand, published in 1801, and it shows the episode when Chactas and Atala are discovered by a hermit. Chactas is an Indian brought up by Lopez, a Spaniard. He decides to leave Lopez to return and live in the nature. He falls into the hands of a tribe, Atala saves him and they escape together.
