Confederate general who directed the first action of the Civil War, the bombardment of Ft. Report via telegraph to Jefferson Davis regarding operations in northern Virginia four days prior to First Manassas. On lightly lined paper, General Beauregard informs the President, “The Enemy has assailed my outposts in heavy force. I have fallen back on the line of Bull Run and will make a stand at Mitchell’s Ford. If his force is overwhelming I shall retire to the Rappahannock Rail Road Bridge saving my command for defence there and future operations. Please inform Johnston of this via Staunton and also [General Theophilus] Holmes. Send forward any reinforcements at the earliest possible instant and by every possible means...” Boldly penned and signed. Union General Irwin McDowell is advancing on Virginia with a force of approximately 40,000. Davis responds to Beauregard’s request by sending Johnston to Manassas where they would unite with Jackson to reinforce Beauregard’s 22,000 men. The next day on Jul 18, Beauregard’s plan is successfully tested during a small skirmish at Mitchell’s Ford. Very significant historical content.
