PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD: (1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. He also led with distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Intriguing war-date L.S. "G. T. Beauregard" on Head Quarters, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida letterhead, 1p. 4to., Charleston, Sep. 16, 1863 to an unknown party. In full: "Dear Sir: I have received the letter from Mrs. B[eauregard] you have been kind enough to send me; please return my sincere thanks to the parties connected with its transmission. Hoping that before very long our troubles will be at an end, & that I shall be able to acknowledge personally this favor, I remain, Yours very truly & resp'y, G. T. Beauregard". For some inexplicable reason, the recipient's name has been excised from the letter above the salutation, yet the letter is framed so that the verso makes the excision difficult to notice. These were trying times for Beauregard, who was facing an ongoing blockade and bombardment from naval vessels and captured shore batteries. Several foldtears, repaired with tape on verso, generally rather fragile but in good condition, bearing a fine, bold signature. $1,000-1,500
