This picture was made in 1911, five years prior to Paul Strand's famous porch abstractions. While a few other photographers made similarly abstract pictures at this time, such as Malcolm Arbuthnot and Alvin Langdon Coburn, nothing they created was as unusual as AVENUE CORNER until Coburn began making his "Vortographs" in 1917. Dubreuil was elected to the "Linked Ring" in 1903, and represented by six prints in the landmark "International Exhibition of Pictorial Photography" at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo in 1910. Perhaps the interruption of the First World War and the fact that Dubreuil remained a pictorialist conspired to relegate him to obscurity until fifteen years ago, when Tom Jacobson collaborated with the Centre Georges Pompidou to produce a major exhibition and catalogue.
