PIERCE, JANE
110. JANE PIERCE (1806 - 1863) First Lady, wife of Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States. Rare and good emotional content A.L.S. "Jane" as First Lady on mourning stationery, 4pp. 12mo., Washington, "March `54" to her sister concerning various family and social matters and lamenting the death of her only grown son. She writes in part: "...dear Alfred seemed better for a day or two, and this I hope has continued with the mild weather & greater facilities for taking air and exercise [sic]. I would feign give to the dear boy, more than hopeful words - and am anxious to know if the homeopathic treatment does not, now that he has used it longer, allow of his regaining the strength wh. seemed to fail at first....The gardeners were busy in uncovering the plants yesterday I noticed, and the yellow crocuses have been showing themselves for ten days. The Spring returns again with its bright and beautiful things - but it oppresses me painfully with the thought that my bright and precious one comes no more [Benjamin Pierce (1841-1853)] - as it is so with every change...I received a note from sister Rebecca at Orange - in wh. she quite discourages my hopes of a visit. She & the little are very happy among so many dear friends - & near fiends. Oh! who has so few as I? dear Mary how much you are to me. Oh that I could see you my sister - to exchange sympathy & affection face to face. I have been looking at `Lady Huntingdon' and like it - as I did `Miss Moor' by the same author but my time is so fragmentary I read little. We have one of the large dinners again today - wh. of course I look forward to with no[?] great pleasure...Mr. P is continually engaged - perplexing and involved questions are ever starting up. Who is sufficient for these things?..." Usual folds, otherwise fine.$800-1,200
